Garden Ceramics from Kate Mellors

The pottery is handmade using a variety of techniques. Many of the pieces are thrown in sections and joined together when leather-hard and others are built in sections using slabs and press-moulds. Each piece is made and worked on over a period of days, until it is finished and can be slowly dried out ready for firing.

When the pot is completely dry, the glaze is applied. It is then fired in a 30 cu.ft. propane gas kiln. The kiln is left on low overnight, and fired up slowly and evenly the next day for about twelve hours, until it reaches 1280C. When the kiln is cool, the following day, the ceramics can be taken out.

The pottery is made from grogged stoneware clay. The high-firing makes it impervious to water and completely weatherproof.
